From what I’ve heard from ADP clients, every interaction with ADP is impersonal. No level of service provides a dedicated Payroll Specialist (but you can get a dedicated HR support team if you add their HR services).
Each time you have a question or an issue with your payroll, you need to contact ADP’s call center and wait in a phone queue. You explain your entire situation to a stranger and may even get transferred or put on another long hold.
Long story short, working with ADP is great… until you need to reach a person.
Paychex actually provides dedicated Payroll Specialists… so what’s the problem? According to the small business owners we’ve spoken to, they don’t get to keep them for long.
Paychex doesn’t necessarily do the wrong thing here. If a Payroll Specialist isn’t doing a good job, then they’re terminated. And if they are doing a good job, they get promoted.
That makes sense.
But payroll providers already have notoriously high turnover, and (in my experience) clients want great customer service more than anything… which is easiest to achieve when you don’t need to explain your situation to a new person every time.
That’s why moving Payroll Specialists frequently doesn’t make sense.
