Is Your Business Too Small (or Growing Too Fast) for Monthly Accounting Services?
January 9th, 2026 | 4 min. read
If you own a small business, you don’t want to outsource monthly accounting too early. Or, if you’re very established and growing, you might worry that you’re going to outgrow a monthly accounting service too quickly.
Using CSI as an example, I’ll talk about how small is too small, and how big is too big – because while we say we work with “small” and “midsized” businesses, those terms can mean 100 different things to 100 different people.
At CSI Accounting & Payroll, we’ve provided monthly accounting services for nearly 60 years. That means we’ve answered these business size questions hundreds of times:
- How small are the businesses that CSI works with?
- If I’m growing, when will I be too big to work with CSI?
- I’m still not sure if I’m a good fit to work with CSI long-term. How do I learn more?
How Small Is Too Small for CSI?
When defining “small business”, the answer will vary across the board. Even the SBA is vague! You know that you’re not a large business, so a good starting point is determining whether you have a business or a hobby.
Then, if you think you’re likely a small business, we can talk about what level of accounting you’re ready for: beginner level, or intermediate to expert level.
Beginner Level
Startups and other very small, newer businesses may not have the capital or business activity yet to justify a strategic accounting method. Because of this, you may want to start out with any combination of the following bookkeeping and tax options:
- Handle your own bookkeeping, or delegate it to your support staff as a side task.
- Hire an outsourced bookkeeping service.
- Use an online service to file your taxes, or delegate it to your support staff.
- Work with an outsourced annual tax preparer.
These businesses may not be an ideal fit to work with CSI for monthly accounting.
Intermediate to Expert Level
As your small or medium-sized business starts to grow in revenue and activity, you can (and should) expand your investment. If you're looking for a more comprehensive and accurate accounting experience, the ideal solution is to:
- Hire an outsourced monthly accounting service to handle your bookkeeping, monthly accounting, payroll, and annual taxes under one roof.
That means these businesses could be a perfect match for our monthly accounting service!
But what about even bigger businesses? I’ll also talk about the plateaued experts in the following section.
How Big Is Too Big for CSI?
It’s also difficult to define “midsized business”. You know that you’re not a very small business, but are you too big to outsource monthly accounting? Since you also don’t want to take things in-house too early, let’s talk about who is a plateaued expert that may be ready to take that step.
Plateaued Experts
After a business enters the large business category and needs daily bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, and Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, it should:
- Hire an in-house, full-service bookkeeper or accountant, and, if large enough, an entire accounting department.
These businesses have grown too large for CSI’s traditional monthly accounting service. We may still be able to review your in-house person’s work monthly and handle taxes.
